History in the Woods: The CCC Camp in Willoughby State Forest

Do you enjoy learning about local history? Do you love Willoughby State Forest and the surrounding area? The Westmore Association invites you to a presentation on the local history of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) including the Camp 55 in Willoughby State Forest.
Two presenters, both NEK natives, will offer a valuable look at the development and heritage of CCC Camp 55. William (Bo) Hall will share his experiences and deep knowledge of the site in the state forest from early childhood through young adulthood when he leased the Foresters’ Quarters at the site of the CCC camp for five years.
Luke O’Brien, Recreation Specialist in the St. Johnsbury office of the Vermont Department of Forest, Parks and Recreation, will present a talk and slide show on the history of CCC Camp 55. His presentation includes many photos of the original camp and offers a rich historical perspective.
Jean Haigh will present the plans of the non-profit group, Friends of Willoughby State Forest, to create an interpretive, accessible trail through the CCC camp, restoring and preserving a valued piece of our local history.
